EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 Teased by Tom Cruise; Emily Blunt May Return

     July 29, 2015

One of the more unlikely, if underdeveloped delights of last year’s movie season, Edge of Tomorrow is now looking to hit repeat again. While fielding questions at the New York premiere of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Tom Cruise admitted to MTV that he has not only pitched his idea for Edge of Tomorrow 2, but that the original film’s director, Doug Liman, and Edge of Tomorrow writer (and Rogue Nation writer-director) Christopher McQuarrie were the first to hear his ideas concerning another go at the mech-suit warfare bonanza. ““I pitched it to McQuarrie and Doug. We were there one night and I was like, I’ve got an idea for it,” Cruise said, but proved mum on any word as to what the new storyline would concern. Cruise did, however, say that he already talked to co-star Emily Blunt about the project and that she responded simply with “give me another year, please.”

As much as Edge of Tomorrow felt like distinctly it’s own film, it’s certainly a narrative world that could yield more fascinating ideas than the minuscule conceptual morsels that denoted the hugely entertaining original. There was, for instance, an underlying comment on the repetitive, exhausting life of an action star (like Cruise) that went largely untouched in Liman’s film, though the overall aesthetic and design of that film made up for its philosophical thinness and general impersonality. There’s also the notion and a critique involving how America tends to mythologize war heroes, which the original largely ignored but could give the sequel some real meat on its narrative bones. Regardless, we’ll have to wait impatiently to hear what Cruise has to say about the salient details of the sequel before its apparent if he’s aiming for more bang or more substance.
