Emma Stone Boards ‘Love May Fail’ from ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ Author

Emma Stone sure knows how to stay busy. From starring in back-to-back Woody Allen films to getting nominated for an Oscar for Birdman, the young actress has shown a penchant not only for continuous work but also an ability to find herself in projects with a lot of talent. That trend seemingly continues as she recently wrapped filming Damien Chazelle’s follow up to Whiplash, the musical La La Land opposite Ryan Gosling, and has now signed onto the film Love May Fail.

Per Deadline, Stone will star in the film adaptation of the novel written by Matthew Quick, which is set up at TriStar with Matt Tolmach and Elizabeth Cantillon producing. Quick is best known as the author of Silver Linings Playbook, which was adapted into a feature film by David O. Russell (American Hustle), who in turn landed an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on the film.

Love May Fail follows a woman “who is coming off a demoralizing ending to her marriage to a cheating husband.” She “returns to her hometown determined to clear the name of her favorite English teacher, whose career was ended forcibly after a classroom scandal.”

It sounds like it could get heavy quick. Also, that is quite the life lived for a character that, according to Stone’s casting, is still quite young. Regardless, while it sounds promising, no other actors have been named, nor has a director signed on. However, Mike White (School of Rock) has adapted the book into a screenplay. Other than School of Rock and Freaks & Geeks, I am unfamiliar with White’s work, but his involvement in both those projects bodes well for Love May Fail, as does the fact that it is based off a story by Quick. And hopefully Stone’s involvement may attract other high-caliber talent for the ex-husband and teacher, as well as a director.
