Emma Thompson to Play Late Night Talk Show Host in Film Written by Mindy Kaling

     September 28, 2016

A mighty exciting new project is coming together with some timely subject matter. It’s no secret that the bulk of the late night talk show genre is dominated by men, but that’s all about to change—in the movies at least. Per Variety, Emma Thompson is attached to star in an untitled film penned by Mindy Kaling that revolves around a veteran late night host who runs into danger of losing her show right when she hires her first female writer. Thompson will play the host while Kaling will play the writer in a film that’s excitingly described as a cross between Broadcast News and The Devil Wears Prada.

The project is about to go out to studios where a bidding war is expected to ensue, as Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men and The Social Network producer Scott Rudin is also attached to produce alongside Kaling and Howard Klein.

Kaling has plenty of writing experience having cut her teeth on The Office and gone on to create The Mindy Project, and I’m mighty curious to see her take on the late night landscape. None of the Big 3 have ever hired a woman to fill the late night host’s seat, even as there were plenty of arguments to be made about hiring a woman to take over CBS’s Late Show after David Letterman’s exit.

Of course there’s also the issue of some of the most successful comedians not being interested in the job. Both Amy Schumer and Amy Poehler were offered The Daily Show only to turn it down. And we do have one shining voice in late night at the moment in the form of Samantha Bee, whose weekly series Full Frontal has become must-see television.

Kaling continues to star on The Mindy Project, has a role in Ava DuVernay’s Disney film A Wrinkle in Time, and is also attached to join the ensemble of the Ocean’s Eleven reboot Ocean’s Eight. Thompson, meanwhile, plays Mrs. Potts in Disney’s upcoming Beauty and the Beast.
