THR reports that the-long-midnight-of-barney-thomsonThompson will star in The Long Midnight of Barney Thomson, an adaptation of the Douglas Lindsay novel series penned for the screen by Richard Cowan and Colin McLaren.  Also starring Ray Winstone and Ewen Bremner, the dark comedy-thriller picture follows “Barney, a Scottish barber who, through a series of accidental events, stumbles into the world of serial murder.  Thompson will play Barney’s mother, who emasculates him at every turn, while Winstone will play Detective Inspector Holdall, who has to deal with an inept homicide department while trying to solve the murders.”

THR also brings word that Gyllenhaal and Adams will star in the Prohibition Era-drama Ezekiel Moss for director Seymour Hoffman.  Scripted by Keith Bunin, the picture stars Adams as “Iris, who, emotionally fragile after the loss of her husband, runs a boarding house to get by and provide for her spirited son, Joel. They reside in a small town overrun by religious fervor, and their lives are forever changed when she begins to fall in love with Ezekiel Moss (Gyllenhaal), a mysterious drifter who has the divine ability to channel and physically inhabit the spirits of the dead.”

Also from THR is news that The Secret Scripture has landed O’Sullivan as director, with Chastain and Redgrave starring.  Taking place in Ireland, the story centers on a 100-year old woman who has been in a mental hospital since World War II.  When the facility prepares to close its doors, “a psychiatrist tries to piece together why the woman is there, not knowing she has been hiding a diary under the floorboards.  Chastain and Redgrave are to play younger and older versions of the woman, detailing the scars the Presbyterian woman suffered during Ireland’s civil war and her harsh abuse by a priest.”
