Watch a Video Tribute to Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki

     March 4, 2015

Last summer, we shared a video celebrating the work of Roger Deakins, quite possibly the best cinematographer working today. Well now another video love letter to another director of photography has landed online, and it focuses on the man who’s probably the second best cinematographer working today: Emmanuel Lubezki. You may know him as “Chivo”, and you may also be aware that he’s just coming off of winning back-to-back Oscars for his work on Birdman and Gravity. He’s a master of handheld photography and his work is instantly recognizable, ranging from The Tree of Life to Ali to Sleepy Hollow.

And of course there’s Lubezki’s collaborations with director Alfonso Cuaron, which gave us Children of Men, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Great Expectations, and The Little Princess. There are also a few oddballs in his filmography, including The BirdcageDr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, and his sole Coen Brothers film Burn After Reading.

These films and more are highlighted in this Emmanuel Lubezki video tribute by Vimeo user Jorge Luengo Ruiz (via The Film Stage), and it’s a joy to revisit such an accomplished career. The masterpiece The Tree of Life probably sits atop my personal list, but what’s your favorite work in a Lubezki-shot film? Sound off in the comments below.
