Ewan McGregor Is Not a Fan of the New STAR WARS Lightsaber

     January 27, 2015

When the first Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer was unveiled late last year, fan response was overwhelmingly positive.  J.J. Abrams crafted a teaser that succeeded in telling us essentially nothing about the film, while also giving us a bit of an idea of what the overall vibe will be.  However, the nitpickers out there took issue with one specific shot: the cloaked figure gearing up his fancy new lightsaber complete with hilts.

Many took to the internets to overanalyze the usefulness of hilts when using such a weapon, and plenty of time was spent arguing whether they did or didn’t make practical sense.  Well, if you’re one of those people that found the hilts irksome, you’ve got a Star Wars alum in your corner.

star-wars-the-force-awakens-lightsaberDuring a recent interview with MTV at the Sundance Film Festival for his new drama Last Days in the Desert (read my review here), McGregor was asked about the new Star Wars movies and whether he might appear in one of these sequels.  While he once again reiterated that he hasn’t been contacted at all about reprising his role as Obi-wan Kenobi, he also took the opportunity to share his thoughts on the trailer in a humorous manner:

“You don’t need hilts.  If you know how to handle a lightsaber you don’t need a silly hilt…The Jedi Order managed very well without hilts for hundreds of millions of years!”

If you watch the video it’s clear that McGregor isn’t being incredibly serious about his complaints, but it’s funny to see the actor take issue with this one particular piece of the trailer.  And it’s also clear that he’d be absolutely game to return for the films should bhe be asked.

Watch the video interview below, in which McGregor also humorously explains why it wouldn’t be logical for him to play Obi-wan in this new Star Wars timeline:
