20th Century Fox has announced a slew of release date updates.  Briefly:

  • The Fantastic Four will now open in the midst of summer on June 19, 2015 instead of March 6, 2015.  Josh Trank directs.
  • The Assassin’s Creed movie has been pushed from June to August 7, 2015.  Michael Fassbender is producing and will star in the video game adaptation.
  • Director Matthew Vaughn’s graphic novel adaptation The Secret Service has been pushed out of 2014 to March 6, 2015, taking over Fantastic Four’s previous date.
  • The spy comedy Susan Cooper will open on May 22, 2015.  Paul Feig directs and Melissa McCarthy stars, possibly opposite Jason Statham.
  • An Untitled Vince Vaughn Movie (previously referred to as Business Trip) will open on October 24, 2014.

fantastic-four-rebootAs the months have gone by and a cast has yet to solidify, a release date push for Chronicle director Josh Trank’s superhero reboot The Fantastic Four was seeming more likely.  Indeed, Fox announced today that the pic will now open in theaters on June 19, 2015 instead of March 6, 2015.  That puts the film directly opposite Pixar’s Inside Out and in the warpath of Jurassic World, which is slated to open one week earlier.  Casting rumors have swirled as of late with the likes of Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kit Harington, Saoirse Ronan, and Kate Mara all being linked to the project, but Teller confirmed talks about him playing Reed Richards and revealed that filming is slated to begin in April of next year.  X-Men: Days of Future Past scribe Simon Kinberg recently came aboard to work on the script, while First Class director Matthew Vaughn is producing.

The Assassin’s Creed film has yet to set a director, but playwright Michael Lesslie was tapped to pen the script last year.  The film has been pushed out of the prime summer tentpole season and into a less flashy date of August 7, 2015, where it is currently the only non-Smurfs film set for release that month.

melissa-mccarthy-susan-cooperProduction is currently underway in London on director Matthew Vaughn’s Mark Millar adaptation The Secret Service, but it appears that he wanted to avoid yet another down-to-the-wire post-production process, as the film has been pushed back three months from November 2014 to March 6, 2015, taking over the date that was previously held by The Fantastic Four.  The pic, which stars Colin Firth and Samuel L. Jackson, will now open a week before Disney’s live-action Cinderella.

The third collaboration between Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig and actress Melissa McCarthy will kick off the brutal summer movie season in 2015 on May 22nd.  The spy comedy, likened to a female James Bond, will open directly opposite director Brad Bird’s secretive Disney pic Tomorrowland and a few weeks after the sure-to-be box office crushing Marvel sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Finally, the untitled Vince Vaughn comedy directed by Delivery Man helmer Ken Scott will open in theaters on October 24, 2014.  Dave Franco, Sienna Miller, Nick Frost, and James Marsden also star.
