AMC heard you guys like The Walking Dead, so it decided to put zombies in your zombies so you can zombie while you zombie. Or to put it another way: The Walking Dead spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead will now have its own companion series, Fear the Walking Dead: Flight 462, which will run both as a web series and on-air during this upcoming season of The Walking Dead. So I really wasn’t exaggerating.
The 16-part series — each “episode” of which will be less than one minute long — will be produced by Fear the Walking Dead’s showrunner Dave Erickson and executive producer David Wiener. Though the show will debut online, it will also air during Walking Dead commercial breaks each week throughout the season, starting with the October 11th premiere. Further, one cast member of the web series will become a cast member of Fear the Walking Dead when it returns for Season 2.
The web series will take place aboard a plane, as passengers during the beginning of the outbreak realize one of their fellow passengers is infected. This is where Snakes on a Plane went wrong — they weren’t zombie snakes.
Flight 462 will be written by L. Signorino and Mike Zunic, and directed by Fear the Walking Dead’s director of photography, Michael McDonough. Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV said in a press release,
‘Flight 462’ is a great extension of the world of ‘Fear’ and will engage fans across multiple platforms with another riveting story set at the start of the fall of civilization. We are thrilled to be collaborating with Dave Erickson and David Wiener on another piece of original content. Watching how they’ll bring one of these new characters to the second season of ‘Fear’ will be really exciting for viewers to follow.
With Mad Men off the air now, and Better Call Saul only a modest hit ratings-wise, AMC is now tripling down on its Walking Dead properties. Fear the Walking Dead wraps up with its season finale October 4th, but then The Walking Dead returns the following Sunday, so there will be no Dead drought. Leave no walker behind.
