‘Suicide Squad’ Takes a Hit as ‘Sausage Party’ Wins the Friday Box Office

     August 13, 2016

Who would have thunk it? In a race between Disney and DC, it’s Sony and Annapurna’s weird R-rated animated comedy that’s poised to be the weekend’s big success. Sausage Party is tracking for a big $33 million opening weekend, and the CGI-animation for adults from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg narrowly took the top spot at the Friday Box Office with $13.5M from 3,103 theaters (however, it should be noted that total includes the 3.25M from Thursday). That number puts it just ahead of Suicide Squad, which earned $13.4M from 4, 255 theaters.

However, Suicide Squad is expected to pull ahead on Saturday and win the weekend with a predicted total near $43M for its second frame. The bad news? That puts Suicide Squad at a 67% dropoff from its record-shattering opening weekend, nearly matching Batman v Superman‘s 69% box office free-fall, which was one of the steepest second weekend drop-offs for any superhero movie. Even with the significant drop-off, Suicide Squad is poised to break yet another record, taking the title of best second weekend in August from Guardians of the Galaxy ($42.1M).

If Suicide Squad‘s drop is a bit of a disappointment, it’s Disney’s Pete’s Dragon that’s taking the biggest hit. David Lowery’s CG/live-action hybrid remake of the 1977 family film was expected to land second place after Suicide Squad, but earned only $8M on Friday in 3,702 theaters. A poor showing that puts the $65M family film on track for a $22M opening weekend, well behind expectations.

Finally the weekend’s last new release, Stephen Frears’ Meryll Streep showcase Florence Foster Jenkins, earned an estimated $2M-plus on Friday from 1,528 locations, for a projected opening just above $6M.
