Last night’s fifth season finale of Game of Thrones was eventful to say the least. A number of characters met their demise, and in true Game of Thrones fashion, one of them has spurred a significant amount of anger/frustration. But the stakes and plot machinations of the finale only further proved that the series is very much headed towards its endgame, and Season 6 (likely the penultimate season of the entire show) will be wholly venturing into non-book territory.
If you’re still reeling from the episode and trying to work out the impact of what did (or didn’t) happen, allow showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to break things down for you in the last behind-the-scenes featurette of the season. They underline the terrible, horrible, unmerciful world that is Game of Thrones, and seemingly confirm that yes, Stannis is dead, as is Jon Snow.
With regards to the latter, Benioff and Weiss stress that Snow is not a cautious man and is very much his father’s son: he’s honorable to a fault. It’s these qualities that ultimately lead to his downfall, which is shocking but not necessarily surprising. Five seasons in, we’ve come to expect this kind of “no one is safe” mentality from Game of Thrones, so the reaction to this final scene was the one-two punch of, “Oh!” and then “Well of course”.
