George Clooney in Talks to Star in Alexander Payne’s Next Film, THE DESCENDANTS

     November 2, 2009

While I enjoy poking fun at most actors who never seem to slow down and it feels like I’m announcing a new project for them every week, I never mind it when that actor is George Clooney.  Even when I’m not crazy about the film, like “The Good German” or “Intolerable Cruelty”, I still think he’s great in it.  You’ll find that there’s no escaping Clooney for the rest of 2009 since he has three movies coming out over the next two months.  But since he’s great in “The Men Who Stare at Goats” and “Up in the Air”, I don’t think you’ll mind (I have yet to see “Fantastic Mr. Fox” but I don’t think his voice work is going to let me down).

Even though Clooney is currently in Italy shooting Anton Corbijn’s spy-thriller “The American”, he’s already in talks to star in Alexander Payne’s first film in five years, “The Descendants”.  Hit the jump for details and no respite from Clooney.

According to Variety, “Descendants” centers on a wealthy landowner (Clooney) who takes his two daughters on a search for his wife’s lover in the hopes of keeping his family together.  I don’t exactly follow his logic.  Also, most kids want to go on a road trip to Disneyland or maybe the Grand Canyon.  Going with your dad to meet the guy who’s giving your mom a “special hug”?  Well, let’s say that souvenirs are unlikely and unwanted.

“The Descendants” would be Payne’s first feature film in five years.  He last directed 2004’s Oscar-winning film, “Sideways”.  But while Payne, along with co-writer Jim Taylor, won their “Sideways” trophy for their adapted screenplay, Payne is only directing his upcoming film.  “Descendants” is the first developed screenplay from Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, although both men have done extensive acting work in TV comedy.

As for Clooney, if you and your friends are shooting a movie in your back yard and it’s on his way, I’m sure he’d be more than happy to swing by and star in it.

Okay, so I can poke a little fun at him.
