George Miller’s JUSTICE LEAGUE: Wonder Woman and Aquaman Concept Art Revealed

     May 31, 2015

Last week we learned that Australian filmmaker Ryan Unicomb is developing a proposed documentary about George Miller‘s Justice League Mortal, the abandoned DC project that had a fully filled out-cast featuring Armie Hammer, Adam BrodyTeresa Palmer and many others, a proposed 2009 release date, and heaps of pre-production concept art until production delays, the writers’ strike, and studio hangups over having two Batmans led Warner Bros. to axe the project entirely.

Now the official twitter for the Unicomb’s tentatively titled Miller’s Justice League Mortal has released a set of four concept art images featuring a soaring Wonder Woman, a facial mold of J’onn J’onzz a.k.a Martian Manhunter, and an Aquaman sketch that could not be farther from the Jason Momoa incarnation designed for Zack Snyder‘s Batman v. Superman. Check out the concept art below.

With Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller just reminded the world that he’s a visionary filmmaker with incredible technical acumen, so the getting a glimpse into his planned Justice League is a painful taste of what might have been, particularly when one considers the grim, desaturated DCU we ended up with. And while I previously had no reference point for Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, after seeing her kick all of the ass in Fury Road, I can absolutely see why Miller wanted her for the role and am thoroughly convinced she would have been fucking amazing. Alas, it was not meant to be, but that image of Princes Diana soaring through Themyscira has made me absolutely hungry to see more of how Miller envisioned a cinematic DC universe, and especially what he could have brought to the severely lacking realm of female superheroes in film.

As the filmmakers pointed out in some subsequent tweets, these weren’t final designs, but only a tiny sampling of a massive amount of concept art compiled in the pre-production process. They were also quick to point out that until the documentary get the official green light from all parties, this is about all we’re going to see from the George Miller Justice League movie that might have been. Until then, you can catch up on all things Justice League here, or learn more about how Miller’s film fell apart and why it could have changed the landscape of the modern comic book movie here.
