Find Out How to Catch GHOSTBUSTERS in Theaters This Month!

     October 6, 2011

“Hey, anybody see a ghost?” Dr. Peter Venkman is talking to you, and he has PhDs in parapsychology and psychology, so you should probably pay attention. We already told you that the Ghostbusters are returning to the big screen for three days only this October. Perhaps we haven’t stressed enough just how much your passion for the boys of Ecto-1 influences a possible third installment. Now it seems that Sony has rolled out the hype machine and wants you to get involved, social media style. What happens if you don’t? “Human sacrifices! Dogs and cats…living together! Mass hysteria!”

Hit the jump to save the future of the Ghostbusters.

ghostbusters_movie_image_01After its debut in 1984, Ghostbusters quickly became a cult classic. It spawned a sequel (which I absolutely love) but the franchise sputtered out there. Sure there were a few cartoon series over the years, but we never got a third installment on the big screen. This fact contradicts the fans’ love of Ghostbusters so much that I know people who will swear on Gozer’s grave that, not only a third, but a fourth and fifth Ghostbusters movie exists! Well, that’s all possible if you follow these simple instructions:

Check out the Ghostbusters Facebook page and “Like” them. You can chat with other fans here and get the early scoop on showtimes. Then, follow @StayPuft4Eva on Twitter for quotes, factoids and updates. Next, you can watch the original trailer here and earn a Ghostbusters sticker. (Virtual, not real. It’s not 1984 anymore.)

Lastly, there’s the official site, complete with Slimer, Mr. StayPuft and the wailing siren of Ecto-1. There you’ll see a side-scrolling section of storefronts right out of a Ghostbusters’ video game. There are some fun nods to the franchise here, like Ivo Shandor’s Fine Collectibles, Janosz’s Photo Restoration and the dilapidated offices of Walter Peck at the NY EPA. There are plenty of things to check out for the sake of nostalgia alone. (Of course, there are even more opportunities to buy things through this site. And I mean, a lot of things!) You can also find a page for the Ghostbusters video game Sanctum of Slime.

So if there’s somethin’ strange in your neighborhood, who ya gonna call?

Here, again, is the official press release:

Who Ya Gonna Call?

Commenting on the announcement, Rory Bruer, president, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures, said, “We’re delighted to be bringing Ghostbusters back to the big screen – this is a special celebration of the movie, giving the fans a chance to see it on the big screen in perfect digital presentation.  As we head towards Halloween, we ain’t afraid of no ghosts, but just the same, we’re glad that everyone’s favorite paranormal eliminators are on the case.”

The film was directed and produced by Ivan Reitman, with the screenplay written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, and Rick Moranis.  The executive producer was Bernie Brillstein.

In Ghostbusters, University parapsychologists Dr. Peter Venkman (Murray), Dr. Raymond Stanz (Aykroyd) and Dr. Egon Spengler (Ramis) lose a research grant when their experiment methodology is proven to be bogus. The team decides to go into business for themselves and open ‘Ghostbusters,’ a ghost removal service. After struggling to get on their feet, they are summoned to investigate the strange happenings in Dana Barrett’s (Weaver) Central Park West apartment. What they discover is that all Manhattan is being besieged by ghosts and other worldly demons through a portal in her building.

Ghostbusters is available on Blu-ray™ and DVD.
