Rebecca Ferguson in Negotiations to Join ‘The Girl on the Train’ Opposite Emily Blunt

     August 18, 2015

Fresh off of her crowd and critic-pleasing performance in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Rebecca Ferguson is seeing an uptick in high-profile movie roles. The latest casting news puts her in negotiations to star in director Tate Taylor’s adaptation of the year’s hottest novel, The Girl on the Train. Not only would this move capitalize on Ferguson’s cachet and the book’s popularity, it would put her opposite the underrated talent of Emily Blunt. That on-screen pairing is enough for me to pledge my movie ticket money already.

Empire reports that Ferguson is in negotiations to star in The Girl on the Train, which follows Rachel (Blunt), a recent divorcee who narrates her struggle with alcoholism as a coping mechanism and fantasizes about the lives of a couple she sees every day from her train, until one day she witnesses something awful in their home. When Rachel blacks out from a drunken bender only to wake up at her own place covered in blood, her fantasies begin to take a dark turn. Ferguson’s role would be that of Anna, a mistress of Rachel’s ex-husband whom he also jilted for another woman. While I’m not familiar with Paula Hawkins’ novel or Erin Cressida Wilson’s adaptation of it, I’d imagine that the role had to be substantial enough for Ferguson to opt for it rather than take the female lead in Gambit.

While we’re talking casting news, Empire also reports that Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ own John Boyega has landed a new role. He’ll join writer-director James Ponsoldt’s adaptation of Dave Egger’s The Circle, a thriller that stars Emma Watson and Tom Hanks. The movie’s title is also the name of a fictional mega-corporation, which hires a young woman named Mae Holland (Watson) to join their workforce of young, bright, talented individuals. The company seems great to Mae at first – the modern office, the lavish parties – but she soon learns that The Circle’s plan to unite all society through technology is altering her own life in ways she never intended.

It’s a little unclear just which roles Hanks and Boyega will be playing. For Hanks, there are a number of older males who work at the company, in addition to Mae’s father being an important character. As for Boyega, there are at least three potential love interests for Mae that he could play, though delving too much into those characters’ stories gets us in the realm of spoiler territory. We expect to get more clarification over the next year or so since The Circle is due out in 2016. Take a listen to what Ponsoldt had to say about the film’s status in this recent interview.
