Glenn Ficarra and John Requa Exclusive Video Interview – I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS

One of the standout films from this year’s Sundance Film Festival was writer/director’s Glenn Ficarra & John Requa “I Love You Phillip Morris”. While the pressure was on for these new director’s as they had Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Rodrigo Santoro and Leslie Mann involved, I can tell you the film absolutely delivers on both ends of the spectrum. Not only is the film laugh out loud funny, but by the end, you might even have tears in your eyes. Trust me, while the film takes tons of random turns, each road traveled eventually gets you back to the heart of the film…. Steven Russell’s (Jim Carrey) love of Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor).

While I don’t know who bought the film and when you’ll be able to see it, I’m beyond confident that some studio will pick it up as Jim’s performance was fantastic and it could be award worthy.

Anyway, while at Sundance I was able to do a great interview with the two men responsible for the movie – writer/diretor’s Glenn Ficarra and John Requa.

During our extended interview we talked about everything – from their work on “Bad Santa” to how “I Love You Phillip Morris” was made. Also, they told me on the eventual DVD we’ll be getting around 30 minutes of deleted scenes. While that news might not interest you yet…after seeing the movie, you’ll be very excited to have heard that news.

And for more on the movie, here’s a link to my video interview with Rodrigo Santoro and here’s a clip from the film.

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa – Part 1

  • Bad Santa talk

  • Did they feel like they were definitely going to get in with the stars in the film

  • We talk about the writing process and how much of the craziness that takes place in the movie is based on the truth

  • The casting process – how difficult was it getting Jim Carey in the movie – they tell a great story about how it happened

  • Luc Besson produced the movie – how did that happen

  • Did they test screen the movie before Sundance

  • They say they still have some editing to do. They want to take out a few minutes from the Sundance cut

  • Distribution talk

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa – Part 2

  • The writing process

  • When did they first hear about the Phillip Morris story

  • They talk about how many drafts they wrote for free and how long they’ve been working on the script

  • They talk about how much they cut out of the movie and how Jim made them put scenes back in

  • Deleted scenes talk – they cut out a big storm sequence which is about 15 minutes. They also talk about a lot of other scenes they cut out. This DVD is going to be loaded. All together they say they have about 30 minutes of “good scenes”

  • I ask why did cast Rodrigo

  • What are they working on now
