‘Goosebumps’: Jack Black & Slappy on Making a Scary Film for a New Generation

     October 16, 2015

With director Rob Letterman’s Goosebumps now playing in theaters, I recently sat down with cast members Jack Black & Slappy to discuss the making of the film. During the interview they talked about memorable moments from filming, Slappy being a diva on set, how it feels to have made the first scary movie for a new generation of moviegoers, and more.

If you haven’t seen the trailers or clips, the movie is an adaptation of the beloved R.L. Stine children’s horror books. Jack Black plays a fictionalized version of Stine who finds his quiet suburban life thrown into chaos when his cavalcade of creatures unexpectedly come to life thanks to a teen neighbor, Zach (Dylan Minnette). Along with his daughter (Odeya Rush), Stine teams up with Zach to recapture the menagerie of monsters before they destroy their small town. Goosebumps also stars Ryan Lee, Jillian Bell, Amy Ryan, Halston Sage, and Ken Marino.

While I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, I thought it was it was a great monster movie for kids. At the screening I attended I was surrounded by tons of 7-12 year olds and they were all jumping in their seats and freaking out with their friends. It was fun to watch.

Here’s Jack Black and Slappy and here is Matt’s review.

Jack Black & Slappy:

  • How does it feel to make the first scary movie for a generation?
  • Memorable moments from filming.
  • Was Slappy a diva on set?
  • Did the script change during production?
