‘Manchester by the Sea’, ‘Moonlight’ Lead Gotham Awards Nominations

     October 20, 2016

And just like that, the first awards nominations of the season have arrived. Nominees were announced today for the 26th Annual IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards, which are voted on by members of the Independent Filmmaker Project and serve to highlight the best of the best in indie film. Kenneth Lonergan’s masterful grief drama Manchester by the Sea received the most nominations with four in total, including Best Feature, Best Screenplay, Best Actor for Casey Affleck, and Breakthrough Actor for Lucas Hedges. The film is one of the frontrunners in the Oscar race at the moment, and this is likely one of many, many ceremonies in which it makes a big showing.

Also landing big is Moonlight, a stunning coming-of-age story from filmmaker Barry Jenkins that scored nominations for Best Feature, Best Screenplay, and Breakthrough Director and also landed a Special Jury Prize for Best Ensemble with the Best Actor/Actress and Breakthrough Actor nomination panel opting to highlight the film “in which actors at all levels of experience give outstanding performances that speak eloquently to one another both within and across each chapter of the story.” It’s yet another film that you’re going to hear a lot more about as the Oscar season rolls on.

The nominees overall are a swell snapshot of a great 2016 in indie film. I’m happy to see Richard Linklater’s 80s comedy Everybody Wants Some!! scored a Best Feature nod, as well as recognition for ambitious Swiss Army Man directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Moreover, that Best Actress category is stacked.

Check out the full list of nominees below, which also include TV honors for Marvel’s Jessica Jones.
