Fox has released a clip from the upcoming second season of the popular Batman origin series Gotham, this time giving us a good look at Arkham Asylum and an iconic villain. Cameron Monaghan made his debut on the show last year as Jerome Valeska, a seemingly distraught young boy whose mother had just been murdered. In a Law & Order-style twist, Jim Gordon (Benjamin McKenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) discover that it was in fact Jerome who murdered his own mother, and the interrogation scene ended with Jerome laughing maniacally and showing off a great big grin, introducing Gotham fans to the show’s incarnation of The Joker.
The theme of the show’s second season is “Rise of the Villains”, and so it’s fitting that this new clip focuses on a now incarcerated Jerome making small talk with fellow inmate Barbra Gordon. Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson are incredibly tough acts to follow (just ask Jared Leto), but Gotham’s iteration of Joker here is…not exactly promising.
Gotham is a pretty silly show, but it had a couple of bright spots in its first season, namely Donal Logue’s Harvey Bullock and Robin Lord Taylor’s performance as Penguin. Executive producer and principal director Danny Cannon recently told us that the show will be much more serialized in its second season, as the writers were careful to craft one long 22-episode arc instead of trying to tell standalone stories with a serialized arc in the background. It’ll certainly be interesting to see how this approach affects the overall quality of the series, and if it maybe bolsters the show’s weaker elements. Unfortunately it looks as though Baby Bruce Wayne is still here to stay.
