‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Is the First Film to Shoot with Red’s 8K WEAPON Camera

     January 6, 2016

Last year, Red introduced the 8K WEAPON Vista Vision to their users, but the technology is making its way to the big screen for the first time in a big way. Announced today via press release, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 will be the first feature film production to use the camera, and the writer-director revealed his “truly cosmic” excitement on social media.

According to the release, the 8K WEAPON “captures 8K at 75 frames per second, 6K at 100 fps, or 4K at 150 fps with REDCODE® RAW,” and features “interchangeable lens mounts, an intelligent OLPF system, and in-camera 3D-LUT outputs.” It’s an advantage that most filmmakers don’t need, per se, but more resolution and higher frame-rates are good things, especially when it comes to Disney’s other galaxy far, far away.

Here’s how Gunn broke the news:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 executive producer Nik Korda followed up the announcement in a statement:

We are all hugely excited to be shooting the next Guardians of the Galaxy on the new WEAPON 8K. This is my third collaboration with RED, having previously shot with the RED EPIC® on Prometheus and the EPIC DRAGON on Tarzan. The large sensor size and super high resolution offered by the new WEAPON 8K, combined with its lightweight and compact size open up a whole range of new creative possibilities.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 returns Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, and Vin Diesel as Groot. Though details have been few and far between, the story will feature the mystery of Peter Quill’s elusive daddy. Speaking of which, Kurt Russell recently confirmed reports that he’s in talks with Marvel for a role, said to be Quill’s dad. Also said to return are Benicio Del Toro as The Collector and Karen Gillan as Nebula.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled for release on May 5, 2017.
