     December 21, 2012

The coveted lead role of Star-Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has been narrowed down to three possible suitors. From the original shortlist of actors that were reported as auditioning less than a month ago, only Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas) remains. A new addition in the form of Zachary Levi (Chuck) is also in the mix. The studio also reports that an unnamed actor may test for the lead after the holidays.

Star-Lord, aka Peter Quill, is a human-alien hybrid who is a master strategist and combat expert, wears an ability-enhancing suit, pilots a psychically-linked ship and leads the Guardians of the Galaxy. The film, directed by James Gunn (Slither) is expected to open August 1, 2014. Hit the jump for more on the audition process.

Variety reports that Zachary Levi - Guardians of the GalaxyLevi and Sturgess are the frontrunners for the lead of Guardians of the Galaxy, with a potential dark horse candidate waiting in the wings. Levi has long been in Marvel’s sights, with an offer to play the warrior Fandral in the original Thor, only to pass it up due to NBC ordering more episodes of Chuck. Interestingly enough, Levi will now step into the role Fandral in Thor: The Dark World, having replaced Josh Dallas. Although Levi has never led a feature, Marvel is reportedly impressed with his audition and is open to continuing and expanding their relationship.

Sturgess, on the other hand, has a number of lead credits to his name, including Robert Luketic’s 21, Peter Weir’s The Way Back and in Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe, not to mention multiple roles in the Wachowski Siblings’ Cloud Atlas. He also happened to lead a group of animated guardians in Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’HooleWhat do you think, fans? Levi, Sturgess or should we put our money on an unknown?
