NBC has released a new key art poster for their upcoming revival series Heroes Reborn, and it is not instilling a ton of confidence. Once upon a time I really loved Heroes. The show was a pretty unique entity in its time, offering a serialized shared-world superhero story before the comic book adaptation craze took over the entire entertainment landscape. Unfortunately, while the first season was thrilling and engaging, bolstered by compelling characters and a pretty gruesome villain, the series collapsed on itself the more it delved into the characters’ connections and wavering motives.
The new Heroes Reborn poster, perhaps somewhat audaciously, promises “A new phenomenon begins.” It’s my genuine hope that NBC’s limited series can capture that some of Heroes best season one world-building mystery elements, while adapting to the current expectations of Televised programming – which is to say, we are now used to really fucking good, high quality serialized storytelling.
Hopefully series creator Tim Kring is willing to ditch the elements of Heroes mythology that never worked and genuinely do something new. While they’re bringing back a number of original cast members, Kring previously commented that they are intended to provide continuity in a show led by new characters and new ideas. It’s a good sign that Sylar and the Petrellis are nowhere to be seen, as it was their interweaved melodrama that ultimately sealed the deal and turned me off from the series.
I haven’t been crazy about their key art so far, and this latest poster is no exception. Rather than offering up something “new” like the catchphrases and mouthpieces of the series keep promising, they’ve been entirely based on aping the original series’ eclipse motif. However, they are just promotional posters after all, and it’s not uncommon for anticipated productions to maintain this kind of ambiguity in their early art. I’ll say this though, the official images and art we’ve seen so far are really leaning into color, a nice change from the often bland visual world of the original series. TVInsider debuted the art, and as they point out, we’ll get a better sense of what we’re in for when NBC brings the cast and crew to Comic-Con next month.
