     September 16, 2012

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the publishing of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s The Hobbit (coined “Tolkien Week”), a new trailer for Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will debut on Wednesday, September 19th. You’ll remember the film’s first trailer was released back in December with some new footage (a.k.a. The Hobbit 1.1) popping up online last month. In addition to the new trailer, Jackson also promises a week filled with “special content” so anyone and everyone interested in staying up to date on the pic will do well to reference the director’s Facebook page regularly.

Check out a video of Jackson’s announcement after the jump. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens later this year on December 14th and stars Martin Freeman, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellan, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Evangeline Lilly just to name a few.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey:

“The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.
