Google Earth Reveals the Arena for the Quarter Quell from THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

     January 31, 2013

None of us can hide from Google Earth, not even the post-apocalyptic future of Panem.  The satellite imaging service has uncovered the arena for the Quarter Quell, which is held every 25 Hunger Games.  In The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the 75th Hunger Games is upon Panem, which means a new arena for the contestants.  Fans of the book know the design of the arena, and if you don’t mind spoilers, you can check out what director Francis Lawrence and his crew are building.

Hit the jump to see the arena.  The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Liam Hemsworth, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland, Jena MaloneJeffrey Wright, and Amanda Plummer.   The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens November 22nd.

Fans of the book know that the arena is shaped like a giant clock, and the horrors of the arena change every hour depending on the location of the contestants.  The production is probably using some soundstages for parts of the arena, but I like that they’re building the set outdoors.  This could be an amazing shot if Lawrence chooses to pull back and show the entire arena.

If you want to see a diagram of the arena, Deviant Artist Alternatecoppa has done an amazing job:

Here’s the official synopsis for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire:

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.
