INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 Adds Maika Monroe as President Whitmore’s Daughter

     April 28, 2015

I had a good feeling we’d be seeing more of Maika Monroe after she appeared in Ramin Bahrani’s At Any Price, but the success of It Follows likely locked in a promising career for the pro kiteboarder-turned-actress. Just weeks after It Follows scored over $160,000 in one weekend in just four theaters and earned itself a wide release, Monroe has been cast in the highly anticipated sequel to Independence Day.

Director Roland Emmerich made the announcement on Twitter, but THR also chimed in with a few more details. Apparently Monroe will be the female lead in the film, Liam Hemsworth’s character’s love interest and President Thomas J. Whitmore’s (Bill Pullman) daughter, Patricia Whitmore. Admittedly, I am a bit disappointed that Mae Whitman isn’t returning to take the role, especially when she grew up to be a talented actress, but there’s no doubt that Monroe is a quality replacement.

In addition to It Follows and At Any Price, I also highly recommend checking out her performance in The Guest. It can’t be easy holding your own opposite Dan Stevens when he’s busy commanding the screen in such a bold role, but Monroe still made for a strong, unique final girl of sorts.

Once filming on Independence Day 2 gets underway, Monroe will join Pullman and Hemsworth as well as ID vets Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Brent Spiner and Vivica A. Fox, and newcomers Jessie Usher, Travis Tope, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Joey King. The film is expected to go into production next month and hit theaters on June 24, 2016.
