I’m a fan of Veronica Roth’s books and also enjoy Divergent quite a bit, but The Divergent Series: Insurgent marketing campaign is absolutely killing all hope for the sequel. Whether you’re familiar with the source material or not, it’s obvious that the trailers fail to convey a compelling version of the new narrative and are also loaded with ridiculous CG-heavy stunts. A big part of the appeal of the books is the human quality to them and the opportunity to track how the characters get themselves out of this outrageous scenario, not necessarily by shooting everyone or climbing all over buildings, but by figuring out what’s best for their loved ones and the population as a whole. We haven’t really seen much of that in the promos.
MTV just unveiled a new Insurgent poster and, unfortunately, it’s more of that Tris (Shailene Woodley)/Four (Theo James) back-to-back, flying through glass nonsense, but hopefully the marketing team will do something different with their next endeavor which is a big one; Insurgent is getting a Super Bowl pre-game show TV spot. You can check out the new poster and a short video of Woodley announcing the airdate of the film’s next trailer below. The Divergent Series: Insurgent hits theaters on March 20th and also stars Octavia Spencer, Zoë Kravitz, Ansel Elgort, Mekhi Phifer, Naomi Watts and Kate Winslet.
Here’s the synopsis for The Divergent Series: Insurgent:
THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.
