Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR Will Be Released on Around 50 IMAX Film Screens Worldwide

     June 20, 2014

With digital projection becoming the industry standard, getting to see a film print projected is becoming a very rare experience.  Even IMAX has moved to digital projection with their new laser projection system arriving in 2015.  While I understand why the industry has moved to digital projection, like many of you, I miss the texture and imperfections that only comes from watching a movie on film.  Also, as much as digital can recreate a moment on screen, there is just something cold about the image, and while it’s suited for some movies, it hasn’t been as effective for others.  It’s still got a long way to go to recreate the magic of film projection.

While IMAX had previously announced that Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar would be shown in the large screen format due to most of their theaters going digital, many have been wondering just how many theaters could project his movie on celluloid.  According to Greg Foster, President of IMAX Entertainment, the number will be “somewhere around 50” screens globally.  Hit the jump for more.

interstellar-posterAs most of you know, Christopher Nolan loves IMAX.  He shot part of The Dark KnightThe Dark Knight Rises, and Interstellar in IMAX, and came away with amazing results.  I don’t know how many of you got to see The Dark Knight in IMAX, but I’ll never forget the first time I saw the opening of the film at the Citywalk in Los Angeles.  It was one of those times I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing, and I left the theater with my jaw still on the floor.  While 3D can be used to great effect, I think most blockbusters should be shot in IMAX.

With Nolan having shot his recent films in IMAX, I’m expecting great things from Interstellar.  Especially when we learned that he strapped an IMAX camera to the front of a learjet!  Click here if you missed that story.

Last night on the Hong Kong red carpet for the world premiere of Transformers: Age of Extinction, I asked Greg Foster, President of IMAX Entertainment, if Interstellar would be projected using IMAX film prints and he said that “somewhere around 50” theaters globally would be doing it.  He also went on to talk about IMAX’s relationship with Nolan and the importance of being able to offer filmmakers choice not only with the camera they want to use, but how they want their movies to be shown.

Watch what Foster told me below.  Expect a list of IMAX theaters around the globe showing Interstellar on film in the near future.
