Wang Xuequi Joins IRON MAN 3 as Additional Filming Begins in China; New Images Released

     December 10, 2012

Since production details regarding director Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 first started to trickle out back before filming began, we’ve known that Marvel has been planning to shoot some scenes in China.  This decision made perfect sense as the film’s villain, played by Ben Kingsley, was rumored to be the half-Chinese half-English comics character The Mandarin, and China’s DMG Entertainment was mulling a co-production deal with Marvel on the film.  Filming on the superhero sequel started up this past June in North Carolina, but throughout the long shoot filming never moved over to China.

Now it appears that, just five months out from release, Black and Co. are gearing up to do some additional filming in Beijing as Chinese actor Wang Xuequi has joined the cast.  Hit the jump for more details, including a couple of new images.

Filming in China was long-expected to happen not only because of the origins of the villain, but because China’s DMG Entertainment is Iron Man 3’s Chinese distributor.  As we’ve been seeing more and more, the lucrative Chinese box office is spurring studios to make their blockbusters more “China friendly,” and Iron Man 3 looks to be no exception.

Per Deadline, Chinese actor Wang Xuequi has joined that cast as new character Dr. Wu with some additional filming in Beijing set to begin today.  Rumors surfaced earlier this year that Hong Kong actor Andy Lau would be playing the comics character Radioactive Man in the film, but Lau subsequently backed out.  Xuequi may or may not be filling Lau’s role, but Deadline notes that Xuequi’s character “is not a huge part” so don’t hold your breath for some big comics parallel for the role.  As the film’s release date isn’t far away, I also don’t expect that Black will be filming too much in China.  Principal photography has already wrapped, and apparently some of Xuequi’s scenes have already been shot here in the states.
