jake-gyllenhaal-southpawFirst up, it appears the long-in-the-works boxing drama Southpaw is finally getting off the ground.  The Wrap reports that Jake Gyllenhaal is currently in negotiations to lead the film in a role that was previously filled by Eminem.  The story revolves around a left-handed boxer who wins a title but suffers various tragedies in his personal life, all while trying to win back the love of his daughter.  Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy) penned the screenplay and Training Day helmer Antoine Fuqua is still attached to direct for The Weinstein Company.  Should Gyllenhaal sign on, the film can finally move forward to production.

Additionally, Deadline reports that Christopher Walken and Lenny Kravitz will lead the musician drama Little Rootie Tootie, which revolves around a veteran jazz pianist who is mourning the death of his wife when his musically inclined son and daughter-in-law return home to calm his increasingly manic and destructive behavior.  Dan Algrant wrote the script and will direct, with production poised to get underway in January in New York City.

The indie thriller A Conspiracy on Jekyll Island has firmed up its cast, with Variety reporting that Frank Grillo, Minnie Driver, Dianna Agron, Maggie Q, and Ed Westwick will star in the film from writer/director Aram Rappaport.  The story follows an ex-Wall Street Man (Grillo) who is enlisted to thwart a cyber attack that threatens to destroy the US economy.  He works with his wife and a “rag tag team of misfits” to prevent the attack.  Filming will begin next month.

Finally, director Matthew Vaughn has added a femme fatale to his in-production adaptation of the Mark Millar comic The Secret ServiceColin Firth leads the thriller and Deadline reports that Sofia Boutella will be playing the female antagonist alongside Samuel L. Jackson, who plays the film’s main villain.  Boutella will join the production in London until January.  The film opens in theaters next fall.
