G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Director Jon M. Chu and THE PURGE Producer Jason Blum Want Your Help Making JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS Movie

     March 20, 2014

It’s not April Fools’ Day.  I’ve checked five or six times.  Following on the heels of the fake James Bond 24 trailer, I thought the announcement of a Jem and the Holograms movie from G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu and The Purge producer Jason Blum was also a joke.  It is not.  It is a twisted reality where they along with producer Scooter Braun (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never) want to adapt the 1980s animated series, which was [per Wikipedia] “about music company owner Jerrica Benton, her singer alter-ego Jem, her band the Holograms, and their adventures.”

Hit the jump for more.

If you’re a fan of Jem, then this may seem great, except Chu, Blum, and Braun apparently don’t have much of an idea of what the movie will be beyond a “modern-day, live-action reinvention.”  Beyond that, they want your creative input.  They want to know what you love about the character and they’re also accepting 2-minute casting submissions where you sing a song but can also be “any age, any gender”.

Obviously, this is all being done to bring attention to a project that may never happen, but it still strikes me as incredibly sad and desperate.  It’s also a little odd that three dudes are so concerned about adapting a show that was targeted towards little girls.  Then again, following G.I. Joe and briefly being attached to an adaptation of Masters of the Universe, Chu wants to be the go-to-guy for adapting 1980s kids series into movies.

Here’s their explanation video [via Chu]:

And here’s the opening theme song for Jem:
