Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer Are Writing a Movie Together

     August 26, 2015

Prepare yourself, internet: Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer are going to be in a movie together. Social media erupted last month when Schumer shared photos of herself vacationing with Lawrence in Martha’s Vineyard, an experience she recounted on The Daily Show as something that happened somewhat spontaneously. But while Lawrence and Schumer only just met a few months ago, it appears they became fast friends as the two are not only planning on starring as sisters in a new movie, but they’re writing the film as well.

Lawrence broke the news in an interview with the New York Times, saying they’ll play siblings in the film:

“We play sisters. We’re almost done writing. It just flowed out of us. We’ve got about 100 pages right now.”

The Hunger Games actress says she emailed Schumer after seeing Trainwreck, which quickly turned into a texting friendship, which then became a professional collaboration:

“Amy and I were creatively made for each other. We have different flavors. It’s been the most fun experience of my life. We start the day off on the phone, laughing. And then we send each other pages. And we crack up. I’m flying out tomorrow to see her in Chicago. We’ll write a little bit with her sister, Kim, who worked with Amy when she was writing Trainwreck.”

While Trainwreck was Schumer’s first feature film, she has plenty of experience as a writer and comedian through years of standup and her excellent Comedy Central series Inside Amy Schumer. This is the first we’re hearing of Lawrence’s writing talent, however, and I imagine every studio in town is now tripping over themselves trying to get on the phone and snatch this sure-to-be-huge project up ASAP—assuming it’s not already set up somewhere, that is.

Schumer is separately writing a mother-daughter comedy at 20th Century Fox with her sister, Kim Caramele, that will likely be her next project, but no doubt this new film with Lawrence will also be a priority. The Fox film doesn’t have a director just yet, but 50/50 and Warm Bodies helmer Jonathan Levine has an offer last we heard.

Lawrence, meanwhile, just wrapped X-Men: Apocalypse and is next set to shoot the sci-fi romance Passengers opposite Chris Pratt this fall. She’s also attached to The Rosie Project at Sony, which recently had Richard Linklater eyeing the director’s chair. But first, she’ll be seen onscreen this fall in two very different films: the concluding chapter to the Hunger Games series, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, and her third collaboration with director David O. Russell, Joy.
