JERSEY SHORE to End After This Season

     August 30, 2012

The airwaves will be down a few overtanned Italians come next year.  MTV has announced today that the upcoming sixth season of the popular “reality” series Jersey Shore will be the last.  The show premiered in 2009 and quickly become a cultural phenomenon with its cast of colorful characters coining absurd, nonsensical phrases and punching the air for no reason.  The show’s ratings began to decline in its fifth season, with last year’s finale netting 4.99 million viewers.  That’s really not too shabby for cable television, but it’s a far cry from the season three high of 8.87 million.

MTV’s decision to cancel Jersey Shore likely wasn’t only about ratings, as the cast had visibly grown a bit tired of pretending to live comfortably in a rental house and drumming up faux drama.  Moreover, Snooki is spawning a child (God help us all), and watching Mom Snooki on future seasons of Jersey Shore would just be depressing.  If you’re sad to see the crew go, rest assured knowing that more spinoff series a la Snooki & JWOWW and The Pauly D Project are likely on the way.  Season five of Jersey Shore kicks off on October 4th, which will be preceded by an hour-long retrospective on September 6th.
