Jessica Chastain to Star in Princess Diana Biopic, CAUGHT IN FLIGHT

     November 6, 2011

Jessica Chastain (The Debt) is set to star in the Princess Diana biopic Caught in Flight for director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall).  According to Thompson on Hollywood, the movie will revolve around Diana’s real-life secret affair with heart surgeon, Dr. Hasnat Kahn, “who was said to be the love of her life.”  Their two-year affair began in 1995, and Kahn maintained his silence until he spoke on record to The Telegraph in 2008.  TOH adds that the movie is described as a “love story between a princess locked in a tower and an ordinary man.”  Some would say that Di was just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.

Hit the jump for more on the project.  Pre-production is set to begin in March 2012.  Chastain will next be seen in Ralph Fiennes Coriolanus, and she’ll star opposite Tom Cruise in the sci-fi blockbuster Horizons.

In a statement to buyers at the American Film Market (AFM), Hirschbeigel talked about “the compassion and wisdom Dr. Kahn showed to Diana.”  In Kahn’s interview with The Telegraph, he says that their relationship was so serious that she considered converting to Islam, and was reportedly heartbroken when he wanted to end the relationship.  During their affair, Diana was married to Prince Charles (who also cheated on her) and the two divorced in 1996.  Di was killed in a car accident in 1997.  Sources who have read the script tell TOH that Steven Jeffreys‘ (The Libertine) script casts the late Princess “as a damaged person who stalks the doctor after he ends the affair.”  The movie sounds like an opportunistic yet generic romantic drama featuring a famous person as one of the characters.  But I suppose it’s fitting that the parasitic media that focused on her in life should give way to a parasitic movie.
