One of the things that has distinguished John Oliver as a late-night news host is his willingness (like Jon Stewart) to go beyond comedy and really dig in to those he’s covering. But not even Stewart has gone as far as Oliver has with his direct message to Jack Warner about the FIFA scandal. (Warner, a former FIFA vice president, is accused of facilitating bribes, but has suggested he may turn on the organization).

Oliver’s “The Mittens of Disapproval Are On” segment (a direct callback to Warner paying for his own TV time earlier in the week in an advertisement called “The Gloves Are Off”), was broadcast not on HBO, but on Trinidad and Tobago National Television, where he lambasted Warner over allegations of corruption, and begged him to turn on FIFA.

Oliver has been an outspoken critic of FIFA since the World Cup in Brazil, and while the video has received some controversy since airing Tuesday night, mostly, it’s just a lot of truth-tellin’ (and John Oliver’s attempts at Trinidadian slang are pretty hilarious).

Check out the excellent video below (the highlight of which is probably “for his cats!!”). Last Week Tonight with John Oliver airs Sunday nights at 11 p.m. on HBO.
