     April 19, 2012

Tony, Toni, Toni.  We’ve got three casting notes for you today featuring one for Tony Danza and two indies for Toni Collette.  Here they are at a glance:

  • Tony Danza has been tapped for Jospeh Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut, an untitled dark comedy that also stars Julianne Moore and Scarlett Johansson.
  • Toni Collette is eyeing the indies Miss You Already and The Long Way Down.

Hit the jump for more on each of the projects.

Variety reports thattony-danza-joseph-gordon-levitt-untitled-comedy Gordon-Levitt has chosen Danza to play the role of his father in the untitled dark comedy.  The father figure is apparently too concerned with sports to pay attention to his family.  Little else was reported on Danza’s role, but Gordon-Levitt’s character is a contemporary Don Juan living in New Jersey and addicted to porn.  While attending night school and attempting to make himself into a better person, he starts a relationship with a recently widowed older woman, played by Moore.  I will go ahead and assume that Johansson, who plays Gordon-Levitt’s girlfriend, is not too keen on that.  The film is scheduled to begin production next month in Los Angeles.

Variety also reports that Collette, who recently reunited with Little Miss Sunshine co-star Steve Carell for The Way, Way Back, is setting her sights on two more indies.  First up is Paul Andrew Williams-directed Miss You Already, where Collette will join Jennifer Aniston.  Collette and Aniston will play two lifelong best friends who help each other through their respective struggles. Aniston’s character will battle breast cancer while Collette’s more reserved character will deal with the birth of her first child and an absentee father.  The shoot is scheduled to start this fall in London, from a script co-written by Williams and Morwenna Banks.

As for The Long Way Down, a Jack Thorne adaptation of Nick Hornby’s novel which sets four strangers on a collision course, so to speak, when they coincidentally plan to leap to their deaths from the same rooftop on New Year’s Eve.  Collete would play the role of a single mom  to a disabled young man.  Pierce Brosnan is also in talks to join; he would play a disgraced talk show host The Long Way Down will shoot from late summer into early fall, also in London.
