Justin Theroux to Direct Will Ferrell and Steve Carell in SWEAR TO GOD

     August 9, 2012

Will Ferrell and Steve Carell are already planning a post-Anchorman 2 reunion.  The actors will topline the comedy Swear to God, which centers on a narcissistic hedge fund manager (Ferrell) who thinks he has seen God.  Warner Bros. picked the project up last summer with Ferrell set to star and Adam McKay (Step Brothers) onboard to produce and direct, but McKay will now be helming Anchorman 2 instead. With production on that glorious sequel set to begin early next year, Warner Bros. is keen on filming Swear to God next summer.  As such, they’ve tapped Justin Theroux to now step in and direct.

Hit the jump for more.

justin-theroux-swear-to-godThe multi-talented Theroux has had memorable roles in Parks and Recreation and Six Feet Under, and he most recently appeared in Wanderlust.  He wrote the scripts for Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2, and wrote and was set to direct Zoolander 2 before Paramount put that project on the backburner (forshame!).  He’s only directed one theatrically released feature thus far—2007’s Dedication—but Warner Bros. seems to have faith that he can spearhead this high profile comedy.

Theroux will rewrite a script from Due Date scribes Alan Cohen and Alan Fredland, while McKay, Ferrell, and Chris Henchy will produce through their Gary Sanchez banner.  The plan is to go into production next July, directly after Ferrell and Carell wrap Anchorman 2.  Ferrell and McKay’s past collaborations have carried a fair amount of subtle satire and political commentary, so this logline made sense when the two attached themselves to the project.  Since Theroux’s directorial voice is relatively unknown, it’ll be interesting to see what his vision for the project entails.
