Kevin Costner in Talks to Star in Sports Drama MCFARLAND

Kevin Costner is gearing up to tackle another sports film.  THR reports that Costner is in talks to star in McFarland, a Disney sports drama that tells the true story of a coach in 1980s McFarland, California who created a high school track team made up predominantly of Latinos that “overcame many social and physical hurdles to become champions.”  Whale Rider director Niki Caro is onboard to direct, with Miracle and The Rookie producers Mark Cirardi and Gordon Gray set to produce.

Costner’s no stranger to sports flicks, as he notably starred in Field of Dreams, Tin Cup, and For Love of the Game.  The screenwriter for McFarland is unspecified, but the pic is apparently being made for $17 million.  Costner most recently starred in the mini-series Hatfields & McCoys and he’ll next be seen on the big screen as Superman’s adoptive father in next summer’s Man of Steel.
