And the Great Film Slate Shuffle continues. THR reports that Matthew Vaughn‘s untilted Kingsman prequel has moved from its original November 15, 2019 premiere date to February 14, 2020. The film’s vacant late-2019 spot will be filled by Logan director James Mangold‘s Ford v. Ferrari movie starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale, which was originally scheduled to open on June 28, 2019 but now has a tasty spot during Awards Season.
Change is all pretty understandable, considering 20th Century Fox—which has housed the Kingsman franchise since the original, 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service—is at the tail-end of its integration into Disney. But while Valentine’s Day 2020 isn’t exactly an empty slot—there’s a yet-announced Warner Bros. DC project on the docket, along with Legally Blonde 3—there is some prime available real estate now that Bond 25 was pushed back two months to April 8, 2020. It’s worth noting that Fox’s graphic novel adaptation Nimona from director Patrick Osborne is also set to debut next year on April 14.
Concrete details on the Kingsman prequel are being kept pretty close to the chest, other than the fact it’s a “period drama” set during World War I starring Harris Dickinson, Matthew Goode, and Ralph Fiennes. Although the prequel is currently shooting, Vaughn is also writing a proper sequel to 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which would bring back the franchise’s stars Taron Egerton and Colin Firth. According to our own Steve Weintraub, that bad boy will head into production later this year.
Fox’s Ford v. Ferrari film, another untitled period piece, centers on the heated rivalry between the two car companies as they sped toward the 1966 Le Mans race. Damon is set to portray the engineering mind behind the Ford GT 40 while Bale will play Ken Miles, the driver who took the pioneering car into the race itself. Considering the film’s new debut date, you have to assume the studio is feeling pretty confident about both performances.
