Lady Gaga, Amy Adams, and More on What Oscar Movies Mean to Them

     February 21, 2019

The Academy Awards are right around the corner now, so the very first season of Collider For Your Consideration is winding down, but right now we’re celebrating the end by going back to the beginning. One of the very first conversations we had on the show, way back in September, revolved around the question, what does it mean to be an Oscar-worthy movie? We all had different answers to the question and the discussion didn’t even stop there; our answers continued to evolve and we found ourselves revisiting the topic often so figured, why not open this discussion up to others? Specifically, to the Oscar nominees themselves.

Over the last few months, I was lucky enough to attend the press days for ViceGreen BookA Star Is Born and more, which meant I was crossing paths with those who were in the thick of it this awards season. So I asked them, “What does the term ‘Oscar movie’ mean to you?” This has been going on for quite a while now so it’s a thrill to finally get to share this piece with you, especially at a time when my movie-loving heart is so full and eager to celebrate the abundance of cinematic achievements this awards season. So right now we bring you our Oscar montage of Amy AdamsAngela Bassett, Mahershala Ali, Viggo Mortensen, Peter Farrelly, Lady Gaga, Sam Elliott, Lily Tomlin, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos discussing the meaning of an Oscar movie. We hope you enjoy the continued conversation! (Hat tip to Steve Weintraub for adding The Favourite filmmakers to this line-up.)

Be sure to join the Collider team for a ton of awards coverage on Oscar night, Sunday, February 24th. You’ll get all your breaking news right here on and the Collider Video team will also have a live stream up and running the entire ceremony so that you can get commentary on the winners, performances, and more during the commercial breaks. The Collider For Your Consideration trio will also be on hand for a pre-show beginning at 4:00pm PT and a post show as soon as the ceremony wraps up. Happy Oscar weekend everyone!
