     December 2, 2013

While director Stephen Frears’ Lance Armstrong biopic is churning along with Ben Foster in the lead, Paramount and Bad Robot have reportedly set a screenwriter for their own take on the cyclist’s life.  D.V. DeVincentis (Grosse Point Blank, High Fidelity) will pen an adaptation of Juliet Macur’s book, “Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong”.  Macur, a reporter at The New York Times, covered Armstrong’s career for a period that covered his bout with testicular cancer, to his seven Tour de France titles, to the stripping of those honors after admitting to engaging in illegal doping.  Hit the jump for more.

cycle-of-lies-lance-armstrongDeadline reports that DeVincentis will tackle this version of the Lance Armstrong story.  There are two other biopics in the works.  One is the aforementioned Frears and Foster pic, which remains untitled and also stars Chris O’Dowd as journalist David Walsh, in a script by John Hodge who adapted Walsh’s book, “Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit Of Lance Armstrong”.  Warner Bros. and director Jay Roach front the other picture, Red Blooded American, which boasts Bradley Cooper as a producer and eventual star as either Armstrong or the cyclist’s teammate and whistle-blower, Tyler Hamilton.

Here’s a look at “Cycle of Lies” which is due out in March of next year (via Amazon):

Cycle of Lies by New York Times reporter Juliet Macur is the definitive account of the rise and fall of the most famous athlete of our generation, Lance Armstrong, through unprecedented access to the key players in his life, and the investigation into the allegations of systemic doping. Relying on previously unpublished documents, Cycle of Lies reveals how Armstrong managed to perpetuate his myth for so long, the fortress he built to protect his image and upend anyone who got in his way, and why he fell so quickly.

Spanning 14 critical years in Armstrong’s cycling career, Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrongcovers his comeback from cancer, to the business deals that would make him a millionaire many times over, until the moment he stepped down as the chairman of his Livestrong charity. The story features key characters such as disgraced Tour de France champion Floyd Landis; Armstrong teammate George Hincapie; and Kristin Richard, Armstrong’s first wife and possible doping accomplice.

The history of one of the most precipitous and unceremonious falls in the history of sports, Cycle of Lies delves into exactly who was complicit in keeping Lance Armstrong’s doping a secret from his legion of fans.
