Larry Charles to Helm A WALK IN THE WOODS Starring Nick Nolte and Robert Redford

     November 1, 2013

The adaptation of Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods has seen Richard Linklater and Robert Redford lined up to take the director’s chair, but  it now looks as if Larry Charles (Borat) will have the honor.  Charles is a bit of an odd choice, not just based on his resume which includes the Sacha Baron Cohen-fronted trio of oddball character films and episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but also because the Brooklyn native is not exactly the image that springs to mind when conceptualizing a trek down the Appalachian Trail.

Long in development, A Walk in the Woods stars Redford and Nick Nolte as two high school friends who meet up later in life to tackle the Appalachian Trail, catching each other up on their respective lives while making observations about the world around them during the journey.  Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) penned the script.  The production is now looking forward to a March start date.  Hit the jump for more.

Along the way, the duo face off with each other, nature and an eccentric assortment of characters only to discover that some roads are better left untraveled.”  Here’s what Charles himself had to say about the position:

“Growing up in the wilds of Brooklyn you can see why I was the natural choice to direct A Walk In The Woods,”  Charles said. “I didn’t see a tree till I was 27. I’ve pitched a lot of projects but I’ve never pitched a tent. But A Walk In The Woods is not merely about a hike. It is an epic intense absurd journey through our collective past, present and future. A journey outward and inward. A journey into darkness but also into the light. And I am honored and humbled to take that walk with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. Two true bonafide icons of American cinema. Does anyone have bug spray?”
