Warner Bros. Greenlights LEGO Movie with CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS Duo; ROBOT CHICKEN Helmer to Co-Direct for 2014 Release

     November 12, 2011

Last year, we reported that Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs writer-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were working on a movie based on everyone’s favorite construction toy, Lego. While most scoffed at Hasbro’s plan to make movies out of games like Ouija and Candy Land, the notion of a Lego movie isn’t all that terrible. Add in the fact that Lord and Miller, whose Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is an incredibly hilarious/sweet work of animation goodness, and Lego actually sounds pretty appealing. Well now the film has officially been given the go-ahead, and is on track for a 2014 release. Hit the jump for more.

Variety reports that Warner Bros. has given Lego the greenlight, with an eye towards a 2014 release date. The film will be an animation/live-action hybrid, with about 80% of the film comprised of animation. The Happy Feet animation studio Animal Logic is onboard to handle the visuals, and WB has brought in Robot Chicken director Chris McKay to co-direct. Lord and Miller are currently putting the finishing touches on their live-action debut 21 Jump Street (which looks great), so bringing in some extra help makes sense. McKay’s Robot Chicken sensibilities seem like a perfect match for the gloriously goofy duo of Lord and Miller.

Animal Logic is also responsible for Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, which while lacking in the story department was a visual treat. They seem a good fit to bring the world of Lego to life.  Producers on the film have apparently made several trips to Denmark to work with Lego execs on the concept, so they’re not exactly disregarding their “source material.” Plot details are underwraps, but the film is said to be an action-adventure set in the Lego world. Casting for the live-action characters begins in January.
