Here’s Who’s Playing the Man in the High Castle in ‘The Man in the High Castle’

     November 29, 2016

The Amazon Original series The Man in the High Castle returns for its second season this month, and viewers will get to meet the title character very quickly. We’ll be dipping ever so slightly into spoiler territory from here on out, so if you haven’t caught up on the most excellent series adaptation of Philip K. Dick‘s masterful alternate history novel, now’s the time to do so.

For the rest of you, you’ll remember that Juliana Crain (Alexa Davalos) left us with a Season 1 cliffhanger in which she meets the title character himself. Unfortunately, we never saw just who that man was. But in a live-stream event today with Davalos and co-stars Luke KleintankDJ QuallsRupert EvansLee Shorten, and producer Isa Dick Hackett (who’s also the daughter of the late author), that actor was revealed. Last chance to turn away now for fear of spoilers.

You can check out EW’s Facebook chat below. Stick around until the end for a teaser clip!

As revealed during the event, Stephen Root will be stepping in to play the title character of The Man in the High Castle, which he described as “a period piece for a period that never was.” His take on the character is that he’s “a bit of a whack-job” but says the character is mysterious, regarded as almost a messiah figure, and may just be completely unaware that he’s the leader of a revolution. He could also be a man from another world who’s looking for an answer to his own world’s perils.

Here’s the teaser clip on its own for good measure:

While Root and the cast were careful not to give anything away, they did address the differences between the show and the book. In Dick’s novel, the title character doesn’t appear until the end of the book and Root explained that it’s a different incarnation of him compared to the show, saying, “This is such a different thing.”

Early in the second season, his “castle” is revealed, but the real castle is actually in his mind. Root also promised that audiences will see “a change in him by the middle of the season … and a big reveal at the end of the season.” We’ll find out more once The Man in the High Castle returns to Amazon on December 16th.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Man in the High Castle Season 2:

Season two resumes with Juliana Crain (Alexa Davalos) facing the consequences of her decision to betray the Resistance and allow Joe Blake (Luke Kleintank), a suspected Nazi agent, to escape the Pacific States with a film originally bound for the Man in the High Castle. Joe himself returns a hero to the Reich and finds himself thrust into the Nazi capital of Berlin, face to face with the father who abandoned him. Meanwhile, Frank Frink (Rupert Evans) becomes increasingly radicalized and drawn further into the Resistance after seeing images of his own execution in the mysterious films.

With political tensions mounting between Germany and Japan, Trade Minister Tagomi (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) begins to regret his success in smuggling nuclear technology from the Reich and seeks solace in the strange new world he discovered at the end of season one. Meanwhile, Obergruppenführer John Smith (Rufus Sewell) struggles to reconcile the values of the Reich with the deteriorating health of his son — all while tasked with a mission from the Führer for which failure is not an option. And Chief Inspector Kido (Joel de la Fuente) begins to take greater interest in the Man in the High Castle, the films, and how Juliana Crain is connected to it all…
