‘Manchester by the Sea’ Cast on Working with Oscar Contender Kenneth Lonergan

     November 23, 2016

We’ve already shared a video of the Manchester by the Sea cast answering your Collider Mailbag questions, but now it’s time to put the focus on the actual making of the movie, and specifically about Casey AffleckLucas Hedges and Michelle Williams‘ experience working with writer-director Kenneth Lonergan.

An acclaimed filmmaker and playwright, Manchester by the Sea marks Lonergan’s third feature film serving as the director following 2000’s You Can Count on Me and the 2011 release, Margaret. He’s also scored two Oscar nominations, one for the You Can Count on Me script and the other for writing Gangs of New York with Jay Cocks and Steven Zaillian. We’ve still got a little more than a month’s worth of 2016 releases to go, but it’s looking likely that Manchester by the Sea could add even more accolades to Lonergan’s growing collection.

You can catch Affleck, Hedges and Williams talking about working with Lonergan in the video interview at the top of this article, and if you’d like to do a little more reading on Manchester by the Sea, click here for Adam’s glowing review and here for Adam’s Oscar Beat on the Best Picture race.

After the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to ManchesterbytheSea to care for Patrick, a spirited 16-year-old, and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and raised.   Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him.
