star-wars-the-last-jedi-mark-hamill-sliceThey did it. The madmen really did it. MGM went and made the Child’s Play reboot something I might support by adding Mark Hamill as the new voice of Chucky, the homicidal doll. The man himself made the announcement over social media. “I can’t wait to bring such an iconic character to life, and present him in a way you’ve never seen him before,” the Star Wars legend said.

This is a twisty situation! I’m a fan of the seven-movie Chucky franchise—which I genuinely don’t think has an outright “bad” entry—and always felt a little ehhhh about MGM not only rebooting the franchise without creator Don Mancini, but also leaving behind the incredible Brad Dourif, who has voiced Chucky in all seven Child’s Play movies. This all gets even wonkier when you realize there is, at the same time, a separate Mancini-created Child’s Play series in development over at Syfy.

But man…Hamill is just so good. His work as Luke Skywalker is obviously what gave him icon status, but his stellar voice-acting career has pretty much been building to this moment without us realizing it. Hamill’s on-again-off-again 27-year stint as the voice of the Joker across numerous projects gave us one of, if not the best Batman villain portrayals of all time. If you say you’re not at least a little hyped to hear Hamill’s Chucky laugh, I do believe you’re lying. Plus, he’s joining an admittedly stacked cast that already includes a pair of bonafide scene-stealers in Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry.

Check out Hamill’s announcement video below. The Child’s Play reboot hits theaters on June 21. Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) directs from a script by Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury 2)
