Marvel Sets Cheo Hodari Coker as LUKE CAGE Showrunner

     March 31, 2015

With Marvel Television’s first Netflix series, Marvel’s Daredevil, set to debut on the streaming service in a matter of weeks, the studio is moving right along with its other planned Netflix shows. Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones is currently filming with a premiere date slated for later this year, and now Marvel TV has found the captain for Marvel’s Luke Cage series. The studio announced today that Cheo Hodari Coker will serve as executive producer and showrunner on the Netflix show, which is set to premiere in 2016. In the comics, the character of Luke Cage is an ex-con with superhuman strength and unbreakable skin who fights crime on the streets of Hell’s Kitchen.

Coker’s credits include the second season of Showtime’s Ray Donovan and the fourth season of the drama series SouthLAnd, and he also penned the screenplay for the rap biopic Notorious, so he has significant experience in both TV and film. He’s the second piece of the puzzle for Marvel’s Luke Cage, as Marvel TV previously announced that Mike Colter (The Good Wife) will play the lead character, first appearing as a guest star in a handful of episodes of A.K.A. Jessica Jones, which is led by actress Krysten Ritter.

Marvel’s Luke Cage is the third in a series of Netflix shows that Marvel TV is developing, and will be followed by Marvel’s Iron Fist (presumably premiering in the latter half of 2016), and then the team-up miniseries Marvel’s The Defenders, which will bring together the characters from all of the Netflix shows into one Avengers-style story arc.
