MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS: Rosa Salazar and Giancarlo Esposito Talk Brenda and Jorge

     July 19, 2015

In Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and the rest of the surviving Gladers head out into the Scorch in attempt to figure out what Wicked is really up to. While searching for answers in the sun flare-ravaged region and its dilapidated cities, they run into Jorge (Giancarlo Esposito) and Brenda (Rosa Salazar), the leaders of a group of Cranks (those infected thee Flare virus) that call the Scorch home.

While in San Diego promoting the film at Comic-Con, I got the opportunity to sit down with Esposito and Salazar to discuss how the changes in the big screen adaptation affect their characters, what it was like working with director Wes Ball and the choice to change Brenda’s hairstyle. You can catch all of that and much more in the video interview below and, in case you missed it, click here to check out my interview with O’Brien, Ki Hong Lee and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is due in theaters on September 18th.

Giancarlo Esposito & Rosa Salazar:

  • 00:05 – Esposito and Salazar play “Would You Rather.”
  • 01:57 – The first act of the movie reveals one character’s agenda and intentions much sooner than the book. Is that the case with Jorge and Brenda?
  • 02:49 – Jorge doesn’t get much backstory in the book, but Esposito is a self-proclaimed master at creating a backstory.
  • 03:21 – On working with Wes Ball; nailing shots when there are so many moving parts.
  • 04:10 – On working with cinematographer Gyula Pados.
  • 05:19 – Salazar on Brenda’s hair; auditioning with a wig on.
  • 06:55 – Has she had any encounters with fans who are upset with Brenda’s new hairdo?
  • 07:25 – Does Salazar get a bigger role in The Divergent Series: Allegiant?
  • 07:47 – Esposito on playing Gus in Breaking Bad; how much did he know about the character when he signed on?
