Michel Hazanavicius Eyes Director’s Chair for Demetri Martin Comedy WILL

     August 29, 2012

Oscar-winning director Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) has shown interest in helming Will, a dormant project scripted by Demetri Martin (Late Night with Conan O’Brien).  When last we reported on this picturePaul Rudd and Zach Galifianakis were attached to co-star with Little Miss Sunshine directors Valerie Ferris and Jonathan Dayton on board and producers Adam McKay and Will Ferrell signed on as well.  There’s no word on how the picture got lot in the shuffle, but it seems like Hazanavicius is interested in reviving it.  Hit the jump for more plot details on Will and to see where it could fit in Hazanavicius’ schedule.

michel-hazanavicius-willDeadline reports that The Artist director and Paramount are interested in bringing Will back to life.  Since the picture has sat on the shelf for the last two years or so, it will be interesting to see what types of script changes have been suggested and just what direction Hazanavicius plans to take it.

Will would center on the eponymous protagonist (Rudd) who lives in a world devoid of free-will where every action is written by angelic scribes.  Then, one day, Will’s writer (Galifianakis) quits, leaving Will to do anything he wants.  It’s easy to see that Rudd and Galifianakis could have a field day with this one, but what’s less obvious is why the project took a back burner to begin with.  One thing is clear, Hazanavicius will certainly have the time to sort the project out as he’s currently involved with a retelling of the 1958 film The Search, from Fred Zinneman.  The updated plot centers on a Chechen NGO worker, played by The Artist’s Berenice Bejo, and a young boy whom she befriends.  The film will  be presented in color and sync sound.
