Jack Black and NACHO LIBRE Director Jared Hess Reunite for MICRONATIONS

     May 18, 2015

A Nacho Libre reunion is in the works. The 2006 comedy was the highly anticipated follow-up for director Jared Hess, after he achieved wild success with the indie Napoleon Dynamite. Though Libre ultimately failed to make the same kind of splash and Hess hasn’t had a hit as big as Dynamite since, the filmmaker is now poised to reteam with his Nacho Libre star Jack Black on a new project.

Buffalo Film Company announced today that it will produce the comedy Micronations, with Hess directing and Black set to star. Penned by New Girl writers Robert Snow and Christian Magalhaes, the story revolves around the world of “do-it-yourself countries”, in which people declare their own backyards “micronations”. Black will play a loveable oddball who finds a place in this bizarre world and is recruited as the head of Defense for the tiny nation of Valoria, population: 12. Valoria soon finds itself in a battle with neighboring nation Wayne County, Nevada.

Apparently micronations are real things, so Hess is drawing from real-life here. The filmmaker most recently wrote and directed the Jermaine Clement-fronted comedy Don Verdean, which debuted at Sundance and is poised to be released later this year. Also this year Hess has the much more commercial comedy Masterminds, which stars Zach Galifianakis and Kristen Wiig.

Black will also produce Micronations through his Electric Dynamite banner. The actor co-stars in the upcoming HBO comedy series The Brink and plays author R.L. Stine in the adventure film Goosebumps, which hits theaters this October.
