Woody Allen Will Co-Star with Miley Cyrus in His Amazon Series

     January 25, 2016

Miley Cyrus is making her return to TV. Well, not TV per se. Amazon. If that wasn’t unexpected enough, she’s doing it alongside Woody Allen. Take a beat to breathe it all in.

According to Deadline, the Hannah Montana star turned raunchy pop star is among the cast of Allen’s new project. The trade also announced Elaine May, who has worked with Allen before on Small Time Crooks, but the same can’t be said of Cyrus. Since settling into her wild and crazy stage persona, the singer appeared on Two and Half Men, and as herself in The Night Before and Netflix’s A Very Murray Christmas. She might’ve been the last person anyone would think of to appear in a Woody Allen work, which begs the question, what is this series actually about?

We still don’t know much, but here’s what we do know: Amazon Studios gave a full season order to the six-episode-long, half-hour series, and still hasn’t announced an official title. Allen wrote and will direct (and now also star in) the project, which marks the filmmaker’s first foray into the small screen space. That’s it.

Allen told Deadline earlier this month that he’s “regretted every second” since agreeing to make the series, though we can only hope his anxiety has settled down.

I had the cocky confidence, well, I’ll do it like I do a movie…it’ll be a movie in six parts. Turns out, it’s not. For me, it has been very, very difficult. I’ve been struggling and struggling and struggling. I only hope that when I finally do it — I have until the end of 2016 — they’re not crushed with disappointment because they’re nice people and I don’t want to disappoint them. I am doing my best. I fit it in between films, so it’s not like, no film this year, I’m doing Amazon. It’s a job within my usual schedule. But I am not as good at it as I fantasized I might be. It’s not a piece of cake; it’s a tough thing and I’m earning every penny that they’re giving me and I just hope that they don’t feel, “My God, we gave him a very substantial amount of money and freedom and this is what he gives us?”

Hopefully Allen won’t add “casting Miley Cyrus” to that list of regrets. (Editor’s Note: Odds on Miley playing Allen’s love interest?)
