Paramount Moves MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL to December 21st; ONE SHOT Set for February 8, 2013

Huzzah!  More release date news!  Following the news that Paramount would release G.I. Joe: Retaliation on June 29, 2012, Deadline reports that the studio has now rescheduled Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol for December 16th and set their other Tom Cruise film, One Shot, for February 8, 2013.  Hit the jump for more details on both projects and what competition they’ll have on their release dates.

one-shot-book-cover-01Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol has moved off its December 16th date where it would have faced Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows and Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. The studio must have some serious faith in M:I-4 because December 21st is an even tougher date.  The only other film scheduled for that date is David Fincher’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but two days later both films will be going up against Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin, Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo, and the sci-fi thriller The Darkest Hour which got some strong buzz coming off its presentation at Comic-Con.

Further down the line you have Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of the first Jack Reacher novel One Shot.  Since Cruise looks like the exact opposite of how the character’s described in the books (Dwayne Johnson would be a much better fit), fans of the novel are skeptical about the adaptation, but Paramount believes they have a new franchise for Cruise.  The studio has faith in the early spring release date because it worked out well last year for Shutter Island (also working out well for Shutter Island: Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, popular source material, and positive reviews).

Here’s the synopsis for One Shot, which currently has no competition for its February 8, 2013 release date:

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.

And sure enough, ex—military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter–a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right–and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning–and then beat him shot for shot. [Amazon]
